SLJ Activity #1 Setting sail

For day 1 activity number 1, our task was to come up with 10 foods that we would take on a three week trip while we are at sea. We had no electricity so we could not take things such as raw meat that needed to be cooked. In our list, we had to explain why we chose those items. Here is my activity!

1) I chose Almond and Cashew mix because they are really filling foods.

2) I picked a bag/basket filled with oranges because they can last 3 weeks they also prevent scurvy. (An illness due to the lack of vitamin C)

3) I chose a loaf of bread because I like bread.

4) A drink bottle filled with water because I wouldn't like to be dehydrated.

5) I chose Coconut water because it is full of electrolights. (Coconut water is low in calories, rich in potassium, and cholesterol and fat free. It is proven that in some areas it is better than water but it is not very hydrating.)

6) A bunch of carrots because carrots taste good and they help me feel better when I get sick.

7) Raspberry jam so that I can have something on my bread.

8) Canned Fruit becuase it would last longer than bananas or other fruit.

9) I chose canned fish as well because I could also have that on my bread.

10) I chose something canned again and that is canned meat. It would be something like pickled silverside. It might not taste great but it is better than eating raw meat.

I made all the pictures myself as you could probably tell.

Thanks for taking your time to read my list. Good luck on your activities if you are doing the SLJ!

Special Meals

My favorite meal is a Green Thai Chicken Curry. I like it because it has green beans and they are one of my favorite vegetables. You can also put different herbs in it for something different. You can also have bread or pizza base with it. I am not a great cook so the Green Thai Chicken Curry is good for me. It is quick and easy to make.   This photo is from Wikipedia. What is your favorite meal?

Waterspouts

This week two groups in our class have been learning about Waterspouts. We leaned a lot about these water pillar. things. They require specific weather climates and conditions to form, they are long tubes of damp air and they look like small tornadoes. Waterspouts occur in the tropics or the countries close to the quainter (The warmer counties). The look like massive beanstalks shooting from the clouds to the surface of the water. The waterspouts descend down from the clouds and meet the water. They form like stalks because there is always forceful air keeping them in place. Waterspouts are really interesting!

One of our activities we had to complete, was an infographic. It is basically some information about the topic put into a fun layout. Here is my infographic.

Brush Ya Teeth

Over the last couple of weeks, Tali and I have been working together on an experiment. For our experiment we were testing what toothpaste (out of the three we tried) was the most protecting.

We cracked eggs in half and kept the egg shells. We then filled up 3 cups with black coffee. Then we took the 3 shells and coated them each in a toothpaste. We only coated the outside of the egg shell. We tried Colgate, Macleans, and a Peppa pig toothpaste. We then placed the egg shell in a cup of coffee and waited 48 hours.

After 48 hours we took the shells out of the cups. The egg shell that had the Peppa Pig toothpaste, it had gone a litle bit darker than a normal egg shell colour. The inside however was a different story. It was also really dark brown almost black on the inside. The Colgate had the least discolouration. This meant that so far in the experament, the Colagte had proven to be the most protecting. The Macleans was a lighter mucky brown. It was not as bad as the Peppa Pig but not as good as the Colgate.

On the last day of the experament, we observed something. The eggs had not changed much colour wise. Of course the toothpaste had disolved off the egg shell. But the colour really hadn't changed much. The only colour change was on the inside of the egg. It was definatly black now.

Yesterday we had a Science fair. We made a Science board and put all our information on the board. Students from other classes and parents came to view our work. This is what our work turned out like.

Plastic Problem

WALT: I can write a shorter persuasive post by making a claim and backing it up with reasons.

This week we have been learning about persuasive writing. We had to choose a topic and then do some research on it. My topic is about plastic why you should you should reduce on your plastic use. It is a really important topic that not many people think about. This is my writing.

Why you should use a reusable water bottle.

I believe every person on planet earth should use a reusable water bottle. Here are my reasonings.

Over 1500 plastic bottles such as water bottles and shampoo bottles are thrown in the ocean every second. Just here in New Zealand! We spend approximately $588 each year on plastic bottles. You could buy 150 loaves of bread and 30 2L milk bottles! It takes a little over 700 years for your plastic water bottle to fully break down. And even then, the plastic will break down into microplastics. Meaning your plastic bottle will never actually leave the earth.

When the plastic bottle is thrown into the ocean, eventually it will turn into microplastics. There are fish that swim in the ocean and they ingest those microplastics. Those fish are eaten by bigger fish, and those fish are eaten by even bigger fish. We eat those bigger fish. This means that the plastic we are putting into the ocean is making its way back to us.

1460 plastic water bottles are saved each year, by you, when you use a reusable water bottle. That is 99 280 grams you are saving from in the ocean. It is estimated that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! There are ruffly 3,500,000,000,000 fish in the pacific ocean right now! So that comes to a lot of plastic.

If you really can't swap out your plastic bottle for a reusable one, for whatever reason, you could switch to using plastic-free shower products. There is a company right here in Christchurch. They are called Ethique. You can by the products through their online store and on Amazon.

You don't have to have a plastic-free lifestyle. Just doing your bit would help.

Berocca and water experiment

WALT: Give a detailed description of what happened.

Last week on Thursday, we did an experiment for science. We described what we thought would happen then tested if we were correct. This is what happened.

The Wrong Planet

A few days ago we used a writing generator to help us pick a category. Mine came up with... 'A not so fun story about a know-it-all President who landed on the wrong planet. I found that pretty funny so I started writing. I learned that you can be as creative/silly as you want and still get a good story.

I really enjoyed doing this task. I liked how I could just let the words flow and not have to brainstorm my ideas like a information or newspaper report. I had nothing I really didn't like about the task.

Here is my writing:

The Wrong Planet

Once there was a know-it-all president by the name of Jackson. He was very rude. He did not care about anyone's opinions but himself. He was going to fly to a far away to an unknown planet. He believed that neptune was an unknown planet. He talked to NASA and tried to book in a take off. (They said no) So he set off building his own rocket.

He went to the cardboard store. He went and got 50 boxes and taped them all together with tape from the warehouse. He got an engine from Repco that he loosely attached to the boxes. He taped it all together. He stepped inside.

“Why is it not taking off!?”he said. “URGH! It’s just too hard!” He was jumping around trying to get a morcillas, dramatic blast off. He was jumping around in cardboard with an engie dangling off the side taped together with warehouse tape. He gave up and looked on trade me.

He searched high and low on the trade me listings. Most of them were fake ones for toddlers. He wanted a 100% real one. Finally he came to the perfect listing. The only thing was that it said the words blue bottom. “Bit random.” he thought. The rest of it was perfect. He picked it up from Rangiora and drove back to his house. He started setting it up. He hammered it all the loose nails and bits of tin. After about seven hours of fixing it, he had finally finished. He took the small rocket, (Just the size to fit himself) shoved it in the boot of his car and toddler off to the nearest abandoned field. About 20 minutes of driving later, he found the perfect one. No trees, animals, or people in houses. It was perfect. He heaved the rocket out of the back of his car a plopped it in the middle of the field. It was time for take off.

Surprisingly, it actually took off! He blasted up high into the air. He looked down and all he could see out the window was fields. He tried to look further. There was a dust cloud forming down the dirt road. Slowly, it became larger and larger. Then there were people with big microphones running just a head of the dust cloud. They were taking photos, interviews and videos. “Oh My Gosh! I am even more famous than I was before!” He was rocketing up into the sky at full speed. A bit of the rocket fell off and he kept flying high. He burst out of the earth. He made it!

He was flying past Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. He was taking in all the  He had finally come to an unknown planet. So he thought. It was only Neptune. He opened the door and hopped out of the rocket. “Yikes it cold! That was super close. I almost didn’t bring my jacket.” He pulled out his phone and started researching because he was certain this was an unknown planet. A ‘Never seen before planet’.

“WHAT!? I AM ON NEPTUNE, NOT AN UNKNOWN PLANET!” “Wrong planet” he thought to himself. He quickly called his friends. “Hey mate! What ya doing on Neptune? Bit stupid eh?” “Yeah can I get a ride back home?” “Sure, hop on in!” So he jumped in the rocket and flew back home. “No more planets for me I guess.”

24 days later...
Jackson goes to the box store and Repco for an engine.

My Circus

Our class has been reading a book called Dumbo with our Student Teacher Miss Elise. She has been making comprehension questions and fun activities for us to complete. A few weeks ago, we had to make our own Circus. Some people made theirs out of play dough, paper and even in Weetbix boxes. Most of us did yours on our devices. This is my Circus.

Pink Shirt Day

Today is Pink Shirt Day!
This is day to wear a pink shirt to show your support for the people who are getting bullied. The reason why we wear a pink shirt is because in Canada there was a student who was getting teased because he was wearing a pink shirt. Hence the colour pink. We hung pink balloons and posters around our school.

We can stand together and stop bullying if we work together.

My Mother

WALT…. Write a Character description and use ‘show not tell’ in our writing This term we have been learning about character descriptions. For Mothers Day, we described our mothers or a female in our life. So our sister, auntie or grandparent. We had previously been using Pig the Pug for practice and learning the sequence of the topics. Here is what I came up with.

 My Mother

My Mum came into this world in 1975 as a yelling and screaming baby.
44 years later, the only yelling she does is at me.

My mum is short. I am taller than my mum. My mum is the shortest in the family.

My dad says she has ducks disease because her butt is too close to the ground.
Mum claims she has shrunk because of her compression fracture!

My mum is kind and loving. She can get very grumpy and angry when

my cousins Drew and Bryn comes over.
Mum calls it ‘Barns Boot Camp’ because it is the only
time they have structure in their day. They trash the house to make my mum furious.
It works every time.

My mum loves sitting with her friends. She loves talking to them

on the phone for what seems like hours on end.
She invites her friends over and their furry friends come and
play with our dogs and birds.

My mum loves having a clean house. Mum and I clean the house every Sunday

while dad is at work. It is just easier with just one child, not two.
Plus, I am more helpful anyway.

Mum is kind, loving and friendly when her two children are behaving. She is forgiving, gentle and thoughtful in every single way.

I love you very much mum.

 From your darling daughter,
 Nevaeh.

Pig the Pug

WALT: Write a character description and use 'Show, not tell' in our writing.

Pig the Pug

Pig the Pug is very round. Pig has wrinkles all over his body. He is short and stumpy and could burst his pants any minute. His eyes can look left and right at the same time. Because of his appearance, he creeps little kids out.

Pig the Pug loves the attention and thinks he is the best. He does not like it when Trevor gets attention. He is great at getting people to look at him and love him because he is hotter than Trevor. Pig needs attention to feed off and stay ALIVE!

Pig the Pug is not very nice. He has a bit of a sharp tongue to him. This can make his friends feel worthless and used. He does not have many friends because he shoves them then puts on a performance to get your attention. Self-absorbed pig!

Pig the Pug has a very cluttered room. It is like his room is confused. He lets his clothes fall out of the wardrobe, and straight on the floor. If his mum asks him to clean his room. His response is "Don't come in here then!" Yep, gross room.

What I found easy: Finding the words to use.
What I found difficult: Finding the words that best suit that sentence.
What I Found interesting: Having the topics in ordered paragraphs.

Against the wind

WALT: Identify complex themes and ideas in the text.

Thursday 28 March 2019

Pushed or not?

Pushed or not?

Pig the pug recently fell out the window of his apartment complex on Wednesday. Trevor, the sausage dog saw it all unfold. Trevor said when we interviewed him… “I swear I did not push him! He was being very greedy and rude! He as been nasty to me for years. Never shares his toys and always gets me in trouble. He would not share with me so he gathered all of our toys and put them in one big pile and climbed to the top. Then he started wobbling, lost his balance and fell out the window.”

Pop and fizzle the twin cats next door, claim they heard pig telling Trevor not to push him out the window. We secretly attached microphones to their clothing and what we heard was crazy! “Great job. I think we really fooled the press” Is this the answer to the investigation or are they telling lies

The question is “Did he really just fall?” Was he pushed? What was Trevor's drive for this crime? And is Trevor really as innocent as he claims?

Once Bitten

WALT: Identify complex themes and ideas in the text.

Last week we read a story called once bitten. It is a out a boy who earned some money from the paper run and so he went to spend it at the coffee bar. He bought himself some food containing a muesli bar. He put it in his pocket and went to sit down. Then he was called to collect his milkshake and he saw a bikie eating his muesli bar. He got mad and started eating it to. Then he got to the bus stop and found his muesli bar. He felt guilty and ashamed.

So one of the activities was to write a note to the bikie apologizing for eating his bar.

My Space

I love to calm down and chill in our schools prayer garden. Nobody runs through it. It is a no screaming zone. It is a very calm place and that is why I like it.

The House That Swayed

The house that swayed I walked up to the swaying house.
The wind was blowing my hair away from my face. I walked up to the door shaking and shivering
in fear. I walked up the stairs at the front door. I lightly knocked on the door. There was no answer. I slowly crept back down the stairs and out to the lawn only to see the door had started creaking open. I walked up to it a little quicker this time and walked inside.

I looked around. There was a swirling staircase with a flickering chandelier hanging above. There were branches knocking at the door asking to come in. I lightly walked up the stairs.

The house started swaying as I took one step at a time up the staircase. The old broken wood kept creaking as if it was telling me to go faster. Suddenly I got wafted with the stench of dead rats. I was shaking at this point. I could not do this anymore! I had to get out of here! I flew down the stairs and ran out the front door. It was pitch black and the only thing I could see was the flickering chandelier. The wind started to pick up. Then the house started swaying and waving goodbye.

Soldier Sister

WALT: Identify complex themes and ideas in text.

This week in week 7 we had to read a story called sister soldier. It is about this girl who has a sister who came beck from the army. She bought back all of the things she had to take with her. This is a list of the test she had to complete in order to be in the army.

Sir Edmund Hillary's life

WALT: Identify complex themes and ideas in the text.

In week 6 we had to create a timeline of Sir Edmund Hillary's life and the events that happened during his life. This is the reading activity I completed alongside Angie and Nika.

Walking on water - Water spiders

WALT: Use the deep five to unpack the text.

Water spiders was our topic for week 3 in our topic reading. This is one of the activities I completed about the spiders. The grass water spider is a type of spider that hunts for its prey on the water surface. Here are some different subjects around what makes up a water spider.  I used Mindmup to complete this activity.
